Research Notes

The Series 5 is a 16-Size, 19-Jewel, Model 1907 movement, originally introduced July 1908 as recommended for railroad service with a straight-finger train bridge, jeweled safety barrel, and parallel bar damaskeening pattern. Early movements are signed in black inlay script without markings indicating the series. The straight-finger bridge was quickly replaced by a refined “hooked” bridge while a marking for adjustments was added to the pillar plate, “Extra Adjustment Five Positions Temperature.” Later movements feature friction jeweling instead of the raised gold pressed settings and are marked with the “Arrow and Triangle” emblem. Eventually, the “Series 5” marking was added on the barrel plate in addition to the emblem. The last iteration of the Series 5 replaced the jeweled safety barrel with a standard going barrel. To retain the 19-Jewel count, endcaps were added to the escape wheel.
